After all, they've hosted not one, but two Winter Olympics there, so if anyone knows how to "do winter" it's the folks in Lake Placid.
One of the things that make this charming village one of the best winter vacation areas in the Northeast is the way they're able to accommodate any and all ability levels for just about any of the winter sports.
Not a top-notch skier? Don't worry - Whiteface has slopes from beginner to advanced. Ready to take your ski-jumping to a whole new level? Then come to the MacKenzie-Intervale Olympic Ski Jumping Complex and compete with world-class ski jumpers. Not a skier at all? Take the elevator to the top of the skydeck on the 120 meter ski jump and take in the best view in the Adirondacks.
Do you crave speed and adrenaline? Then hop on the Olympic bobsled or luge at the Olympic Sports Complex and careen down the same track that our Olympic athletes did. Or try out the toboggan run out onto Mirror Lake - this is a blast and a bit easier on the heart and back than the bobsled ride!
Of course, skating is a huge winter vacation activity, too. Lake Placid won't disappoint in this arena, either. Whether you just want to cruise around a rink with the beautiful Adirondacks as your backdrop, or you're into serious training, you can do it at the Olympic Sports Complex. Pretty much any winter activity you can think of can be done at any ability level in Lake Placid. But what if you're not really into heavy-duty winter sports? Is Lake Placid still one of the best winter vacation areas?
Well, I may be a bit prejudiced, but I'd have to say "Absolutely!" For sheer mountain beauty and down-home charm, mixed with just the right amount of elegance and sophistication, Lake Placid is a great vacation area no matter what the season.
Picture you and your sweetie, strolling hand in hand down the picturesque Main Street as snow flakes softly swirl around. As you gaze into the shop windows, you decide to peek into a couple of the unique stores, leisurely browsing and chatting with the shop owner.
As you leave with your purchases, you both decide that a hot cup of coffee would go great right now, so you head over to the Coff E Bean for a great cup of java.
You head back to your luxury accommodations to relax in front of the fire with a drink. On the way you spot other vacationers having a great time out on Mirror Lake on a dogsled ride! It looks like so much fun you decide to try it yourselves, so you drop off your goodies in your room on the way first (after all, your resort is right on the lake) and then make your way over to the dog sleds.
After a thoroughly exhilarating ride, it's time to back to your cozy room for a drink in front of the fireplace while you decide where you'd like to go for dinner tonight. There are really too many choices, so it's hard to narrow it down!
So whether you're looking for a real active, on-the-go vacation where you can wear yourself out every day, or a relaxing, recover-from-your-job vacation, Lake Placid will deliver exactly what you need.
