| The Lake Placid Olympic Village - world class sports with a small town feel!
Part of what has given Lake Placid its unique character is the fact that it's an olympic village, with an olympic history that sets it apart from most. After all, when you say "Lake Placid" most people think of it in terms of the Olympic games.
Lake Placid was host to not just one, but two Olympic games. One was held in 1932, and the other in 1980. As I walk along Main Street in the village, or gaze at the lake, it just boggles my mind that this small town was able to organize, feed and house so many people - and it still manages to hold onto its small town charm!
Lake Placid and the Olympic Dream
As I've mentioned, I live only an hour and a half or so from Lake Placid, so I go there fairly often. Now, I wasn't around in 1932, but I was 20 years old during the 1980 Olympic games, and I remember well the excitement and Olympic fever that even reached to my neck of the woods. What a feeling of pride and patriotism that little Lake Placid, NY should become an Olympic village once again!
There was definitely quite a bit of history made during those games, too, as almost anyone alive at the time can attest to. Can you say "miracle"?
The Olympic Village Today
It doesn't matter if you're an armchair sports buff or a world class athlete, Lake Placid is still an Olympic village with tons of things to appeal to you.
Whether you'd like to go and sit in the hockey arena where history was made, or gaze upward in awe (and terror, if you're me!) at the ski jumps, you can do that.
If you'd like to go to the top of Whiteface Mountain and ski down the same trails that our Olympic athletes did, you can do that.
What if you're more than an armchair sports enthusiast - in fact, what if you're actually in training yourself? Lake Placid is an Olympic village that is still known for its world class training facilities, hosting over 500 national and international championships since 1980.
But you don't have to come to Lake Placid just in wintertime to experience the Olympic history. Lake Placid has lots of summertime events and activities, too, that re-create some of the Olympic events.
You can do indoor summer skating, take a bobsled ride on the 1980's track, or even learn to ski jump - yes, in the summer! Plus, Whiteface Mountain hosts many fun summer and fall events, like the Oktoberfest. Or you can ride the gondolas to the top of Little Whiteface for some gorgeous views.
Or, if you just want to come and take in the Olympic atmosphere, which is still in the air, you can do that, too!
