| The Latest News, Events, and Goings-On in Lake Placid!
July 14, 2007
Just received some great news about Lake Placid - it's officially been ranked as The Best Outdoor Town in America!
So, it's not just my opinion anymore!
A new book has just been released titled "101 Best Outdoor Towns," written by Sarah Tuff and Greg Melville. They've ranked Lake Placid as the best in America. Read my personal book review here.So How Did They Decide?
According to Tuff, "no other town had so much to offer." They considered several criteria, including proximity to "superior recreation outlets", which includes protected wilderness and major bodies of water, along with livability, accessibility, and affordability.
The authors also looked at the town itself and found "a lively main street surrounded by stunning scenery and filled with great bars, restaurants and great shops."
I think this news just adds to Lake Placid's already considerable charm and appeal, making it even more of a vacation destination!
Pair Will Hike All 46 Adirondack High Peaks in Just 9 Days!
Starting on Saturday, July 15, Kevin MacKenzie and Richard "Rico" McKenna plan to hike all 46 of the Adirondack High Peaks. They hope to complete their hike in just nine days.
That all adds up to a marathon hike of 170 miles total, much of it above 4,000 feet in elevation! The trek is scheduled to end on July 22, at the top of Mt. Marcy, New York State's highest peak.
Just to put this all into perspective, their hike will take them up 60,000 vertical feet. The Empire State building, for comparison, is 1,250 feet high.
What's making this hike different from all others is that they won't use any vehicle or trail support along the way. The men will each carry about 40 or 50 pounds worth of supplies and food in their backpacks. They'll sleep (a couple of hours at a time!) in "bivouac sacks" which are basically waterproof sleeping bags.
They've already deposited bear-proof canisters of food along the route. This way they can accomplish the trek without trail support. They'll carry some water with them, but will replenish with stream and pond water.
Both of these men are avid climbers, but there's more to this expedition than just a physical challenge. They're combining their adventure with fundraising for the Walter R.G. Baker Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Crouse Irving Memorial Hospital in Syracuse, NY.
So far they've raised over $5000 from supporters around the country. McKenna wants to support Crouse Irving Hospital to show his gratitude for care that his premature twins (who passed away) received there several years ago. Crouse Irving Memorial is the main center for sensitive neonatal cases from all around upstate New York.
The men have printed up cards that they'll pass out to hikers that they meet along the way, asking them to contact MacKenzie's wife to update her on where they are in their journey.
She'll post information as she receives it on the family's website, so click here to visit and keep track of this incredible journey!
If you'd like to donate to this worthy cause, you still can by going to the website above. Or you can send them directly to
The McKenna Fund, c/o The Crouse Health Foundation, 736 Irving Ave., Syracuse, NY 13210.
