My Youngest Climbs the Mountain

Few things will prepare you for the majesty and beauty of Whiteface Mountain. It really would be a shame to be in the Lake Placid area and not visit Whiteface Mountain. My children and I have had a number of holidays in the area and a trip up the mountain is always an essential part of that.

Our last visit was during the summer of 2006. Although you can walk up the whole mountain my youngest kid, Poppy, was just four at the time so we drove from Wilmington to the building just below the summit – a strange kind of castle. The kids had something to drink and then we climbed the steps up to the summit where the tower is.

The views have always been spectacular from up there but this was an especially memorable day. We could see the Adirondacks, Lake Champlain and even into Vermont.

In previous years we had taken the little elevator to the summit but it was a triumph for our youngest to walk to the top. Such a special day. We will be back.
