| Visit the Lake Placid Olympic Center and experience some Olympic atmosphere!
The Lake Placid Olympic Center is the best place to start your tour if you've come to Lake Placid for the Olympic history.
The Olympic Center facility is where all of the "ice sports" take place.
The Lake Placid Olympic Center (shown here) contains 4 indoor rinks and 1 outdoor rink. These rinks were active during both of the Olympic games held here, in 1932 and again in 1980.
There's been some history made here, for sure. In 1932, Sonja Henie earned her second gold medal. She then went on to become a movie actress. By the way, Sonja Henie's tutu is on display at the Olympic Museum!
Of course, the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" took place right here, as well. You can sit in the very arena where history was made!
But the Lake Placid Olympic Center isn't just about history. All of the winter sports that went on during the Olympic games still go on here today. And the best part is that you can watch, or even participate!
Today the Olympic Sports Center hosts a huge variety of shows, events, classes, and sports camps. These all happen year 'round, not just in the wintertime.
Imagine, you - yes, YOU! - can skate on the same oval track where Eric Heiden won all of his medals. Public skating is available daily in the winter . And if you don't have your own skates, no problem - skate rental is available, too.
The Lake Placid Olympic Center is also the home of the Olympic Museum, where you'll find changing exhibits, booths where you can watch videos of the Olympic events, and even some of the actual equipment used during the Games!
Today's skiers, hockey players, and speed skaters can use these rinks, too. They come to Lake Placid to train in Olympic-style conditions.
The Center is also the home of Smucker's Stars on Ice. They put on several shows throughout the year. If you go to one of these, you'll see some of the world's finest figure skaters.
The Lake Placid Olympic Center is a concert venue, as well. They've had some pretty big names here - I myself have seen Brooks and Dunn and Travis Tritt here at the arena (yes, I admit it - I'm a country music fan!). Shania Twain and Bob Dylan have been here performing, too.
So remember, even though Olympic history was made here in Lake Placid, the Olympic venues are still just as active and breathtaking today. People come from all over the world to experience first hand the same rinks, slopes and sled runs as the Olympic athletes. And you can, too.
