Lake Placid Travel Options - If You're Driving

Remember that, however you decide to travel to Lake Placid, weather is going to be a factor, especially in the wintertime. We see very heavy snowfalls, sometimes up to 3 or 4 feet at once, and driving can sometimes be treacherous if you're not used to winter driving conditions.

There aren't any major highways in the Adirondack mountains themselves, just two-lane roads. And those aren't always in the best of shape. Just realize it might take you longer to get here than you planned on! So here are driving directions for coming from just about anywhere!

From the New York City and New Jersey Area
Take I-90 (the Thruway) north to the Adirondack Northway (I-87), which is exit 24 in Albany. Follow 87 to exit 30. Pick up Rt. 9 north and stay on it for two miles to Rt. 73. Continue on 73 for about 28 miles to the Lake Placid area. It's about 2 1/2 hours from Albany.

From Montreal
Take Rt. 15 south to Champlain Crossing, connecting to I-87 South. Then take exit 34 west, following Rt. 9N, and then follow Rt. 86 to the Whiteface Mountain/Lake Placid area. This is about a 2 hour drive.

From the Ottawa area
Take any route south to the Cornwall Bridge. Then pick up Rt. 37 east to Malone. Follow rt. 30 south to Paul Smiths, then pick up rt. 86. Follow rt. 86 and continue to Saranac Lake and Lake Placid. This drive is about 3 hours.

From Boston, Springfield, and Hartford areas
Take the Mass Pike (I-90) to Albany. Pick up I-787 north to Cohoes. This connects with rt. 7, which you'll follow west to I-87 north. Follow the Northway to exit 30, then use the final directions above "From New York City ..." This takes about 5 hours (from Boston).

If you're coming from Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse or any points West
Take I-90 (NYS Thruway) east to exit 36 (Syracuse). Pick up I-81 north and follow that to Watertown. Take rt. 3 and follow that east to Saranac Lake, then follow rt. 86 east to Lake Placid. Drive times here depend on how far west you're coming from, but it's 3 1/2 hours from Syracuse.
