What can I do at Whiteface in the summer?

A better question is "What isn't there to do at Whiteface in the summer?"

Whiteface is known for being the site of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic downhill ski events. But what most people don't know is that this mountain is a 4-season resort, and it's just as fun and active in the summer as it is in the winter.

Whiteface Mountain Whiteface Mountain is located in Wilmington, NY, just 9 miles to the northeast of Lake Placid. On the way there from from Lake Placid, you'll drive past a couple of other Adirondack attractions, Santa's workshop and High Falls Gorge, which are also worth a look-see if you have the time.

What are some of the summer activities at Whiteface?

Here's just a short list of some of the activities going on this summer:

Take a nature trek in the forest
.
There are daily guided walks that take you along the Ausable River and the Stag Brook Falls trail. This trek is about 1 and 1/2 hours long. It includes a Cloudsplitter Gondola ride, a customized picnic lunch and a 4" x 6" photo, courtesy of Miracle Moments Photography. Wear good footwear for walking and bring lots of bug spray! The trek happens daily at 11:00 am, and runs from June 30 - September 3. Cost is $25 for adults and $18 for juniors.
Take a scenic gondola ride.

Whiteface has new 8-passenger gondolas named Cloudsplitter. It'll take you from the base lodge to the top of Little Whiteface. It's pretty quick, too, taking less than 15 minutes. This is a beautiful ride, taking you over ski trails, wooded forest areas and scenic overlooks. Great perspectives on the Ausable River, the High Peaks and the MacKenzie-Intervale Ski Jumping Complex used in the Olympics.

This mountain is 3676 feet tall (that's LITTLE?) and at the top you can get out of the lift onto the observation deck. There are picnic tables, too.

Here's a little personal family anecdote - even though I adore the mountains and the gorgeous scenery, I'm terrified of heights! Strange combination, I know. So when I did the gondola ride with my husband and son, who was about 11 at the time, I knew it would be hard but figured I'd be okay.

Well, that was before my son, who isn't afraid of heights, realized how great the views were from the gondola. He was jumping from side to side, exclaiming over the view, and plastering himself like a tree frog to the windows. Meanwhile, the gondola is not only going up and up, but it's swaying from side to side like some drunken carnival ride. My husband and son were oblivious to my panic, (which says a lot for how great the views are!) until I informed them by letting out a moan. My husband had to literally pry my fingers off of the seat where I had latched on in a death grip.

To say I was relieved to get off the gondola and onto the observation deck is the world's greatest understatement. But once there, I can honestly say it was worth it - the view was absolutely stupendous.

It was even beautiful enough to take my mind off of the fact that I'd have to ride the gondola back down!

But don't let my story turn you off - it really is a neat thing to do and well worth the few moments of terror!

Here are the details:

*The Cloudsplitter Gondola ride is open daily from 6/22 - 9/3.

*9/4 - 10/14: open Friday - Sunday only.

*It is open on Monday, 10/8 for the Columbus Day weekend, but is closed on July 22 for the Ironman competition.

Yoga on the Mountain.

If you like yoga, then what could be better than doing yoga on the top of Whiteface? Every Thursday, beginning July 19th, and going through August 30th, you'll be provided with yoga mats and water. You'll get a complementary 4" x 6" photo at the summit in your yoga pose, courtesy of Miracle Moments Photography, too!

If you'd like to try this, just for a day or perhaps for the whole season, you'll need to meet at the base of the gondola at 3:30 pm for the ride to the summit.

Rates: Just $25 each day or $99 for the whole season!

Mountain Biking at Whiteface. If you'd like a bit more action, you might want to think about mountain biking! Whiteface has everything you'll need, whether you're just starting out or a seasoned pro.

Annual Whiteface Oktoberfest. This isn't technically in the summer, but then again it's not technically in October, either! Held this year on September 29th and 30th, 2007. This is always a great time. If you've never been to an authentic Bavarian Oktoberfest, this is a great one to try.
