101 Best Outdoor Towns
Unspoiled Places to Visit, Live & Play

A Book Review

Tuff, Sarah and Greg Melville, 101 Best Outdoor Towns: Unspoiled Places to Visit, Live & Play. 2007 The Countryman Press.

If you love to travel, to find out-of-the-way places where you can still stroll down a main street, slip into a coffee shop, find unique shops, have breakfast in a local diner, and sleep in a wonderfully quiet lodge, then you need to read Tuff and Melville's book.

They've criss-crossed the country, using a fairly scientific process and incorporating data from the U.S. census report and chamber of commerce information, to compile a dream list of the 101 best outdoor towns in America. The two then weeded out any spot that was too developed, too big, too expensive or too far from a major airport. They then threw in some of their own personal criteria, such as requiring a decent coffeeshop and local bar with microbrew capabilities.

The result is this unique guide that will show you all the wonderful places for quick getaways, with breathtaking scenery, lots of outdoor activiites, but a slower pace of life.

Tuff and Melville have divided the country up into seven different geographical categories. Then, under each category, you'll find the states listed alphabetically, for easy searching. Turn to any town that made the cut and you'll find this detailed information:
  • the lowdown on what makes each outdoor town unique
  • a little bit of history about each town
  • all the different activities there are to do there
  • what each town's "claim to fame" is
  • lodging and dining information
  • they've even rated each town's "stay" factor based on livability and affordability
As you're reading about each town, they don't tell you what the ranking is. But when you look in the back, they've ranked the top 10 towns under different categories, such as Top 10 Best Outdoor Towns, Hiking, Mountain Biking, etc. And guess which town is ranked Number 1 under Top 10 Best? You guessed it - Lake Placid, NY! It's also ranked #1 for Hiking and #5 for Downhill Skiing/Snowboarding.

Tuff and Melville have taken a unique approach to putting this book together. One of the reasons I like it so much is because I'm an armchair traveler now, but hope to be a real traveler in the not-too-distant future.

I'm not looking for big cities and glitzy developments, but natural beauty and real people. If this is the kind of traveling you'd like to do too, then 101 Best Outdoor Towns will be a great guide for your planning, or maybe just dreaming.
